One major reason people start smoking weed is because of peer pressure and its social aspect. If you want to successfully quit you will need to make a major lifestyle change that will direct influence your social life. Here are some questions to consider relating to your social life:

With whom do you spend most of your time?

With whom do you smoke weed with?

Do you have any relationships with people that don’t smoke weed?

Do you live with someone that smokes weed?

How has your social network changed since your weed use has escalated?

After addressing these social cues you can determine where you will need to make changes. If you spend much of your time or live with someone that smokes weed you are going to have to consider not hanging with them any longer. Avoiding people and places that trigger your desire to smoke weed is critical. Building a new social network with people that don’t abuse weed is just as critical.

There are many reasons to quit smoking weed and each individual may have a different reason for wanting to quit. Here are several questions to answer when quitting weed. The answers can help determine your level of commitment and the primary reasons for quitting along with major stumbling blocks you may need to overcome or avoid.

How motivated are you to quit?

Are there people in your social network that don’t supply or use weed?

Do you have a pattern of use (certain times, weekend use only, daily, binge use)?

What triggers your desire to smoke weed?

Do you smoke weed alone or with other people?

How and where do you get the money to buy weed?

What circumstances were at play in your life when drug abuse became problematic?

What effects does smoking weed have on you?

What are the roles, positive and negative, that weed plays in your life?

Have you been able to go periods without using?

What kinds of strengths have you identified during previous periods of abstinence?

Are you able to hold down a job or maintain positive relationships while abusing weed?

One of the first steps in quitting weed is to recognize why you are using and determine what needs to be done to either avoid or cope with the things that trigger its use. By conducting a careful analysis of the circumstances of each time you use and the skill and resources available you should be able to put together a plan to achieve your goal of quitting.

No matter what you are addicted to you will have triggers, things that make you feel the need to use. Examples of triggers:

Stress

Certain times of the day

Being around certain people

Eating

Boredom

Having a disagreement with a friend or loved one

There are many things that can urge you to smoke weed and in order to successfully quit you need to be able to recognize and cope with your triggers. Chances are you have tried to cut back or quit smoking weed in the past. Do you remember what caused your failure? Have you been able to make it through periods of cravings or distress without smoking weed? Each time you try to quit or make it through cravings is an opportunity to learn about your triggers.

If you have been able to go days, weeks or even months without using what skills or strengths did you demonstrate? Use them the next time you try to quit, improve them and strengthen them. Focus on what you are doing right and don’t let guilt or shame get in your way of quitting. Always remember why you want to quit smoking weed and don’t give up.

There are many people that have what is called an “addictive” personality. They become obsessed and fanatic about certain things, both good and bad. Too much of any one thing, even if it is considered to be good, can end up having a negative impact on your life. For those that try drugs and alcohol it could result in terrible consequences and addiction.

As a person smokes weed they feel happy, relaxed and worry-free but over time they will need more and more to acquire the same level. At some point the tables are going to turn and they will suffer financially, professionally, socially and spiritually. For those that don’t realize they have become addicted they will continue down the same road blaming others for their poor quality of life. Those with an addictive personality will put more and more resources into getting their fix. Often the negative consequences of smoking weed are never considered, just the desire to get “high.”

When a person decides to quit smoking weed they need to address their conditioning and the psychological effects of smoking weed. For however long you have been smoking weed you have been telling yourself how good it feels, how it relaxes you and how it helps you cope with daily life. All these will need to be addressed when you quit smoking or you will feel like you have given up your best friend. Obviously most of society is able to live without smoking weed and being an addict.

Quitting smoking weed is one of the best things you can do for your health and well-being. However, the last thing you want to do is allow your addictive personality to move from one addiction to another. Often people quit smoking weed only to take up drinking or eating more. The goal when getting your life back on track is to find balance and healthy ways of dealing with daily life.

There are many reasons why people smoke weed however, they revolve around three primary concepts. The first concept is referred to as modeling. This is when someone learns something new by watching another person perform the act. In this case it could be a friend, family member or other important person that modeled the behavior. Many people who abuse weed do so after watching a friend or family member use.

When there is a perceived positive benefit (operant conditioning) it can influence the smoking of weed. Smoking weed produces a “high” effect that many find appealing and this sensation reinforces the act. Smoking weed may occur because it changes the way a person feels, thinks and behaves; just like many other drug addictions. Obviously, the general effect of smoking weed is found to be pleasurable but with extended use the negative consequences of smoking weed are quickly realized and the party is over.

Prolonged use of weed can lead to what is referred to as classical conditioning. Over time, smoking weed may be associated with paraphernalia, certain places, particular people, times of the day and even feelings. For example; if you feel bored you may think about smoking weed to “feel” different or if you are hanging out with a friend you normally smoke with it may trigger the urge to smoke. These are the type of things you need to be careful for when you quit smoking weed.

If you are smoking weed because you are bored then you need to find a new hobby. You need to stop hanging around people that influence you to smoke and you need to avoid places that trigger the desire. Learn how to cope with life, manage your feelings and have fun without smoking weed.

When we started smoking weed it was fun. We felt things we never felt before, laughed and had a good time but over the years it stopped being fun. It became more of a burden; financially, socially, mentally and physically. The only problem is knowing how to quit smoking weed.

After months or even years of smoking weed you can come to believe that you need it to have fun. You probably smoked some before you went out to the movies, bowling, dancing or just hanging with friends. It became a habit that you tightly related with having fun.

The truth is you can have fun without smoking weed but it will feel different at first. You may discover that you are just as funny, if not funnier and that you still are the life of the party. When you quit smoking weed you are taking your life back and it may feel awkward for a bit but over time as you learn (re-learn) what it is like to have fun without weed you be find new joy and pleasure.

Living a drug-free lifestyle opens up doors and creates opportunities for you to experience things you never have before; things that will bring you great pleasure. Don’t fear taking back control of your life; today is just as good as any day to quit smoking weed.

Even though not everyone will get addicted to drugs if they use them they are still harmful to a person’s health, cause people to make poor decisions and affects judgment. Drug use is responsible for over 100,000 deaths in the US each year. As with other diseases, vulnerability to drug addiction differs among users. There is no single factor that dictates whether one person and not another will become addicted. Anyone that uses drugs may be in danger of becoming addicted at some point or another.

There are several factors that increase the risk of addiction:

Method of administration, age of use, peer pressure, and family life. Smoking or injecting a drug into a vein increases its addictive potential. Both smoked and injected drugs enter the brain within seconds, providing a powerful rush of pleasure.

Taking drugs at any age can lead to addiction but the younger a person is when they first start using can lead to more serious use.

Friends have the greatest impact on young teens. Drug-abusing peers can sway even those without risk factors to try drugs for the first time.

Parents or older family members who abuse drugs can also increase the chance of young teens of developing their own drug problems.
